Top 5 DEF Losses from 2015 – Jordan Skolrud

We all know that the offseason can sometime make or break a team. Some are winners and some are losers. Last time I talked about key additions to defenses. So this time lets discuss the top player losses this offseason.

1. Car- CB Josh Norman (Now with the Redskins)
I’m not as high on Josh Norman as others, in fact I wouldn’t even put him in my top 5 cornerbacks.  But losing a CB of his talent, coupled with the loss of Charles Tillman to retirement, means that a great defense lost a lot of experience and veteran leadership on the back end.

2. Mia- DE Olivier Vernon (Now with the Giants)
Another guy that I believe is getting over paid, but the loss of Vernon takes a solid pass rusher away from a defense that added big question marks. New England has owned the AFC East for a decade and the best way to stop that is to get Brady off of his spot with a great pass rush. Miami seems to have a different plan.

3. Den- ILB Danny Trevathan (Now with the Bears)
The Broncos did what they were supposed to do and kept Von Miller but the loss of Trevathan will hurt more than people realize. Great defenses have always been built from the middle out and losing a high caliber linebacker in the middle is a step backwards.

4. Cin- FS Reggie Nelson (Now with the Raiders)
Keeping with the theme of great defenses being built from the middle out, Cincinnati lost an experienced safety that plays well against the deep ball. The AFC North has become a pass heavy division with the Steelers and the Ravens throwing all over the yard and the Bengals success last year was aided by Nelson’s success against the deep ball including a streak of 5 games with an interception.

5. Ind- ILB Jerrell Freeman (Now with the Bears)
The Colts defense was suspect at best last season and they lost one of their few bright spots in Freeman who averaged over 100 tackles a season in his four years. Andrew Luck being healthy should help the defense not be on the field so much but unless players drastically improve or a different scheme gets put in place they won’t even be worth streaming as a defense even in the deepest leagues.
