NFL Draft

Draft Profile: Auburn WR Darius Slayton – Jorge Eckardt

by Jorge Eckardt

Darius Slayton

6’1’’, 190 lbs

2018 Stats

35 receptions, 670 yards, 5 touchdowns

Strengths

Darius Slayton is easily one of the fastest receivers in this draft class. His 4.39 40-yard dash time is tied for sixth best of all wide receivers and tied for eleventh out of all players. He’s also tied for the third and fifth best broad jump out of wideouts and all players respectively. Thanks to his plus speed and his burst off the line, he is a great deep ball threat. He is also great with the ball in his hands, as he has the elusiveness to make defenders miss and add on to the yards after catch. He can and will get physical with a defender and can make a play through some contact.

Weaknesses

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Slayton are his hands. He has a relatively high drop rate and has shown problems in the past with catching particularly faster thrown balls. He is also not a great route runner and sometimes has difficulties tracking balls in the air. As of right now, he does not look like much more than a deep threat, which isn’t inherently bad but it is not a trait that traditionally develops into a No.1 receiver.

Overview

The Auburn wideout will most likely be strictly a deep-ball threat. He was primarily used in that role in college, and it should not change in the pros. Currently being looked at as an early third-day pick, NFL analyst Lance Zierlein compares him to D.J. Chark of the Jaguars. He could very well have an impact on the team that drafts him, however he needs some development.
