Heading into Week 8 of the NFL season we have seen plenty of ups and downs across the board, and as we examine the running back situation this week, here are two top 20 RB’s that could face some tough opposition this week.
Christian McCaffrey vs. 49ers
You are going to start this guy no matter what, he goes up against the #4 ranked rush defense (based on total yards) this week, McCaffrey. CMC has been a beast all year and is the #1 RB in fantasy football. While it is not wise to even consider taking him out of the lineup, let’s temper some expectations for him heading into this week’s matchup against the 49ers.
The 49ers are only allowing 90 rush yards per game and haven’t allowed a running back in the end zone all season. Some of the guys they’ve stopped are Nick Chubb and Todd Gurley, so we shouldn’t expect a TD from CMC.
Derrick Henry vs Buccaneers
Derrick Henry currently sits as the 10th ranked RB (based on rushing yards) and faces off against the #1 rushing defense in the NFL, the Bucs. That’s right the Bucs have the #1 rushing defense with only 408 yards allowed on the ground, an average of 68 yards per game. Henry has been averaging 72 yards a game, has 5 TDs on the ground, and 1 rec TD. The Bucs have only allowed 4 scores on the ground (not bad when they’ve allowed 20 on the year). Two of those came from Gurley, one from McCaffrey, and one from Samuel rushing on an end around in the Panther game.
What to expect? A typical game from Henry – under 80 yards and a score. Also, with Tannehill now under center, we can expect the passing game to open up a little more, and with the Bucs weak secondary, the pass should be their go to option. Unless they are ahead, they won’t be looking to run the ball this week.
