Seattle’s Time to Skate

Yesterday a little more detail was released about the newest hockey team slowly taking shape in Seattle.  The team now has a home, Climate Pledge Arena, (formerly Key Arena), the rights owned by the company Amazon.  Several jokes were going around the web about what this new Arena could be named, but this name is no joke, Jeff Bezos has made that clear, stating the name is “a regular reminder of the urgent need for climate action.”

Wanting this Arena to be sustainable, it will be refurbished to release a zero-carbon output, the first Arena of it’s kind to do so.  Further, all power will be generated by solar panels on sight.  Rounding out this transformation, a system to capture rain is also being added to the Arena and this water will fill the rink.  In order for this to all happen, estimates for total costs are expected to be roughly a billion dollars.

As with many things sports-wise, the project is currently on hold due to the confines of the Covid-19 Pandemic.  The good news is the team is not due to play its first opening game in Climate Pledge Arena until the 2021-2022 NHL Season.  When they do, the team will be part of the Western Conference under the Pacific Division.
