Lewis Hamilton won the pole position for the Hungarian GP. This was Hamilton’s 90th career pole position. His teammate in Mercedes Valteri Bottas placed in second, only 0.1 second behind Lewis. Racing Point had a fantastic session, with Lace Stroll in P3 and Sergio Perez in P4. It was also a good session for Ferrari, as Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc got P5 and P6. So far, this is Scuderia’s best result in this season. Max Verstappen could not find the speed to challenge Mercedes today, and he will start his Red Bull from P7. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will placed 8th and 9th with another strong qualifying performance. Pierre Gasly will start 10th for Alpha Tauri.
Q2 went rather normal. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo was the first man to be eliminated in this session, which means that he will start tomorrows race from P11. Right behind him, George Russell for Williams had another great qualifying result, and he will start 12th. Alex Albon with Red Bull had traffic problems, which affected his final attempt, leaving him with a P13. Esteban Ocon will place his Renault 14th tomorrow on the grid. Nicholas Latifi with Williams wrapped up the list of eliminated drivers by setting his career-best P15.
The first qualifying session saw bits of rain, as the middle part of it seemed to be discouraging for many of the drivers. However, the track improved drastically the last three or so minutes, which meant that everyone would be trying their second chances. Nevertheless, the eliminated drivers were – Haas’ Kevin Magnussen in P16 and Daniil Kvyat with Alpha Tauri in P17. Behind them, the other Haas driver Romain Grosjean finished 18th, ahead of the two Alfa Romeo drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen in P19 and P20. This was another struggling qualifying for Kimi, as the Iceman got eliminated in Q1 for the third consecutive time.
