With all of the buzz coming out of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ camp so far, it’s difficult to believe that Chase Claypool was the 11th WR taken in the 2020 draft.
Last week, he drew the praise of All Pro cornerback Joe Haden who said that Claypool was “Gonna be a problem” Last week, those sentiments were echoed by TE Eric Ebron in a tweet.
There is little doubt that Claypool possesses the size and speed to create mismatches in the open field. All indications from the Steelers’ camp is that the rookie is a fast learner who is quickly developing chemistry with star QB Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben praised the second round draft pick for his positive attitude and solid work ethic.
Defensive coordinator Kevin Butler also chimed in regarding the physical play of Claypool, saying that his size and speed makes him extremely hard to defend, especially in the red zone. “I’m watching him against us, and if we had to play him, I’m sure we would find a way to double him and take him out.” Butler said.
Claypool does have the physical attributes to impose his will against opposing defenses. This is something the Steelers have lacked since they traded Antonio Brown ahead of the 2019 NFL campaign. Still, he is a rookie with the likes of JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington and Diontae Johnson ahead of him on the depth chart.
With the hype surrounding Claypool building every week, there is seemingly a lot to look forward to from the 2nd round pick out of Notre Dame.
