Mack, Bears Stun Bucs, Move to 4-1

The atmosphere at Soldier Field and amongst the city of Chicago was just a tad different Thursday evening. Coming off of a short week that saw the Bears offense get absolutely shut down just four days prior, there was a feeling of importance with a prime time Thursday Night Football matchup with Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bears were 0-5 against Brady prior, and fans were calling for Chicago head coach Matt Nagy’s job.

The Chicago Bears answered the call though, and somehow squeaked out a 20-19 win. After jumping out to an early 13-0 lead behind two Ryan Succop field goals and a TD pass from Brady to Mike Evans on the heel of yet another poorly timed Nick Foles interception, things were looking bleak for Chicago. The Bears offense looked stagnant yet again for the first 20 minutes of football, until Nick Foles turned the gas on. With seven minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter, Foles led a drive down field racking up 64 yards before David Montgomery punched one in the end zone to bring the Bears within a score.

On the following Tampa Bay drive, Kyle Fuller would absolutely level Tampa rookie running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn to force a fumble that would be scooped up by Bears linebacker Robert Quinn. With excellent field positioning, Nick Foles would connect with Jimmy Graham for a 12-yard touchdown pass that would send the Bears to half up 14-13. This marks yet another milestone this season in which Foles has scored multiple times in just a matter of minutes. In a time-span of a minute and twelve seconds, the Bears went from being down 13-0 to being up 14-13. This is an incredible feat, and a sign of how dangerous this offense has the potential to be when it is fully functional.

The second half would be a game of field goals as both Ryan Succop from Tampa and Cairo Santos of Chicago would each nail a pair to do the only scoring for either teams.

While Nick Foles appeared to play better this week given his stat line of 30/42, 243 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, it was Khalil Mack that would be the story of this game. Mack finished this game with 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss. This was exactly the type of performance Chicago fans wanted to see out of their $141M defensive stud given how “ineffective” he has been in the stats category the last four games. This highlight of Mack sacking Brady AND rookie tackle Tristan Wirfs will be played in Chicago for years to come, and I sure will be using it and waiting for it to show up in GIF form!

The Bears earned their “first real” win of the 2020 season according to all the experts and haters out there by beating Tom Brady and a very good Tampa Bay defense. I will reiterate that Chicago’s offense does not have to be stellar, it just has to be better than it was last year and this team will win games. This team can hang with anyone, and fun times are back once again. Enjoy the 10-game break, Bears fans. You earned it.
