Staff Picks: Week Five Waiver Wire

Each week we will be posting a waiver wire article with picks from writers at each position to help you know who to add to your teams from the waiver wire! Players on this list need to be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo or ESPN leagues to qualify.

Quarterbacks – Kevin Atchley

QB Chase Daniel, Chicago Bears (Currently owned in 0% of Yahoo Leagues):

Wanna get really creative with your waiver wire pickup this week? Chase Daniel has that magic in him that will fair well in the Bears week 5 matchup in London. Filling in for the injured Mitch Trubisky, Daniel has a juicy matchup against a Raiders Defense who have given up 65 points in the past two weeks, and just let Jacoby Brissett throw for 265 yards and 3 TD’s against them in week 4. Let the fantasy points flow!

QB Teddy Bridgewater, New Orleans Saints (Currently owned in 7% of Yahoo Leagues):

It might sound dicey on the surface to add Bridgewater, but fantasy football is all about matchups, right? Bridgewater faces a Bucs “defense” that just gave up 40 points to the Rams (in a win, no less!) and has gifted opposing teams 72 (!!) points in the past two weeks, which includes 853 passing yards during that timeframe. Add Bridgewater with confidence this week.

Running Backs – Patrick Fisse

Darrell Williams, Kansas City: Currently rostered in 44% of ESPN Leagues

Darrell Williams has taken advantage of his backfield mate Damien Williams‘ 2 game absence due to a knee injury and seems to have carved himself a role both as a runner and a receiver in the Chiefs backfield. Williams is an obtainable piece in the leagues best offense. Who wouldn’t want a share of the KC offense?

Ronald Jones, Tampa Bay: Currently rostered in 41% of ESPN Leagues

RoJo seems to be separating himself a tad from his “hot hand” team member Peyton Barber. RoJo is by far the more dynamic player in the Tampa backfield and it is only a matter of time before he gets even more touches.

Ito Smith, Atlanta: Currently rostered in 9% of ESPN Leagues

Smith is currently Devonta Freeman‘s handcuff in Atlanta, but has carved out somewhat of a stand alone value role himself. Smith has looked more explosive than Freeman for much of the young season and would have his value skyrocket if something were to happen to Freeman. View Smith as a lottery ticket if you have an extra bench spot.

Wide Receivers – Will Sparling

Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers: ESPN (16% owned) / Yahoo (27%)

Samuel has had a decent start to his rookie campaign but has been overshadowed by other wide receiver rookies this season. He is coming off a bye week last week, and most likely could have been dropped in your league. Samuel is second in targets with 14, second in receptions with 11, and has a 78.6% catch rate. Samuel is starting to get the volume and has the opportunity to continue to the number one wide receiver on this team. If he is out, stash him on the bench and be happy you did.

Diontae Johnson, Pittsburg Steelers: ESPN (6.2%) / Yahoo (6%)

Johnson has stepped into the number two wide receiver role in Pittsburgh. With QB Mason Rudolph, we are not going to see a high pass volume right away, but once we see his comfort level strengthen, we will see the connections between Johnson and Rudolph grow. Johnson had a slow start to the season, but within the last two games he has 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. This is one of those players that you need to get move on quick before everyone else does.

Tight Ends – Dante Pitts

Jimmy Graham, Green Bay (Owned in 35% of ESPN Leagues)

Jimmy Graham should be considered if you are thin at the Tight End spot. So far this season Graham has seen targets of 5,1,1 and 9. Although it is all over the place if Davante Adams misses time it has big upside potential for Graham.

Trey Burton, Chicago (Owned in 34% of Leagues)

This season Burton has been plagued by a hamstring injury that has seen him in a limited role. But with a match up with Oakland whose defense gave up touchdowns to both Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron last week, expect Burton to have a good outing.
