Pop, Lock & Drop It: Week Five QBs – CJ Krause

by CJ Krause

I hope you all survived Wild Week 4 and brought home some victories. Amongst the other crazy things that happened, Joe Flacco had three more touchdowns than Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff had 517 yards in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kirk Cousins actually threw the ball over ten times. Now we are onto Week 5, where we will be without the Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins, so streaming will be a little more challenging.

Let’s break it down a bit:

A “Pop”- a quarterback outside the Top 15 who I believe has Top 5 upside this week.
A “Lock”- a quarterback that, without injury, I cannot see finishing outside the Top 5 this week.
A “Drop It”- a Top 5 quarterback that has the best chance of finishing outside the Top 12 this week.
As always, we are using 4-points-per-passing-touchdown/-1-points-per-interception scoring.

Pop: Andy Dalton

I know he just came off of arguably the worst QB performance of 2019, BUT luckily this week he gets to face the 0-3-1 Arizona Cardinals, who are allowing the 3rd most points to the Quarterback position with an average of 24.3 points per game through the first 4 weeks. This is a matchup to target and a secondary to exploit.

FLASH FACT! So far in 2019, Andy Dalton has a QB rating 22 points higher at home and 32 points higher on turf!

Honorable mentions: Jared Goff vs SEA and Mason Rudolph vs BAL

Lock: Carson Wentz

Coming off a BIG win versus the Green Bay Packers, Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles get a gift of a matchup with the New York Jets. Both teams are coming off a longer break – the Jets having a Week 4 bye, and the Eagles playing last Thursday night. So, both teams will be well-rested and prepared for each other, which will help them run up the score and fantasy point totals. Further, in the first three weeks the Jets allowed the 5th most passing yards, with an average 286.7 yards per game, and allowed 2.7 touchdowns per game. This is a recipe for Carson Wentz to flourish!

FLASH FACT! Carson Wentz has 181 more yards at home than on the road!

Honorable Mention: Patrick Mahomes vs Indy and Deshaun Watson vs ATL

Drop it: Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson came back down to earth this past week, throwing two picks versus the Cleveland Browns. This week is another tough divisional matchup on the road as he’s facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, who just held Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals to only 143 total yards. With the acquisition of Minkah Fitzpatrick, it seems the Steelers have turned the corner and are beginning to hit their stride. Expect Lamar to have a decent fantasy week because of his rushing ability, but I think his turnover potential will keep him out of the Top 12 this week.

FLASH FACT! Since adding Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Steelers are on average forcing 3 turnovers per game compared to the .25 turnovers per game before Fitzpatrick joined the team.

Honorable Mentions: Dak Prescott vs GB and Russell Wilson vs LAR
