Three Players to Sell Before The Playoffs – Zavier Gussett

by Zavier Gussett

With the playoffs approaching in your fantasy football league, now is the time where many team owners will make or break their championship run with last second moves before the trade deadline. To help assemble your team to make a deep playoff run, I’ve put together three players you should consider selling immediately if you are rostering them:

RB, David Johnson – Arizona Cardinals (Currently the 16th ranked PPR RB)

David Johnson had surprised many fantasy owners to begin the year, after he averaged more than 20 PPR points through his first 6 games. Though since then, Johnson has seen Chase Edmonds and Kenyan Drake each enjoy career games starting in his absence. That, along with a back injury suffered in week 7, has limited Johnson’s touches in the previous weeks. In Arizona’s week 10 matchup, after Johnson had 6 total touches for just 10 yards, backup Kenyan Drake was given the bulk of Arizona’s backfield work, even leaving David Johnson later to be benched after he fumbled early in the 3rd quarter. After being out-snapped 45 to 30 by Drake on Sunday, it looks like Johnson may become less utilized in the offense. Whether the reasoning of DJ’s sudden lack of production is due to his back injury, or the newly acquired talent in Arizona’s backfield, David Johnson is certainly losing fantasy value in an offense with three versatile running backs.

RB, Saquon Barkley – New York Giants (Currently the 18th ranked PPR RB)

I know what you’re thinking when I say you should look to trade one of the league’s best at the position, but bear with me. Barkley has dealt with some severe injuries for a running back so far in 2019, and he hasn’t looked like himself since week 2 of this season, averaging just 2.1 yards per carry since then. As much of a freak athlete Barkley has shown to be, his looming matchups against the Bears, Redskins, Eagles (twice) and Packers don’t look good for him in a somewhat lackluster Giants’ offense. Rather than risking the production of your likely 1st round pick, Barkley’s value is still high enough to probably get a high-end RB1 in return, such as Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara or even Christian McCaffrey, heading into your playoffs.

TE, Darren Waller – Oakland Raiders (Currently the 3rd ranked PPR TE)

As a late round pick for many people, Darren Waller came to surprise a lot of fantasy owners even after the Raider’s offense made Jared Cook a top fantasy tight end just last year. Waller’s success has come mostly as a result of his volume in Oakland’s offense, as he’s had 5 games with at least 8 targets this season. Although Waller’s volume has made him a valuable tight end, after getting into the endzone just once aside from a two touchdown performance against Green Bay, he has become entirely dependent on targets. Fantasy owners looking towards the playoffs should have some concern as Waller has failed to exceed 3 catches or 52 yards in his last 3 games. Because of the value of tight ends in fantasy leagues, those who can trade Waller before the deadline should get a good return for him.
