How Could The Top 5 Play Out? – D. Glasser

Scenario 1

Bengals come right out of the gate and take Burrow, not wasting any time to get the draft started, with the Skins on the clock they follow suit, taking Young and moving on in the draft. The Chargers godfather in Rivers gone they have turned over a new leaf, with their new logo they decide to draft his replacement in Tua, letting him sit behind Tyrod Taylor until he is ready or even possibly beating Taylor out in camp. The Lions have been in talks all offseason of trading back. They take full advantage of the Chargers needs at QB, getting back a very nice haul the Lions take Jeffery Okudah with the 6th overall pick and get ready to select two more times within the top 40 and a nice 4th to stash for later…or their next GM. The Panthers lost some of their ammunition this offseason and are looking to make a splash in this years draft, multiple sources had already connected them to Simmons, and the move seemed right for them.

The Dolphins gave up the 5th overall and back to back 5th rounders in exchange for the 7th and 69th overall and the Panthers walk away with a Derwin James prototype, the man said it best himself when asked what position he plays: “Defense.” The Dolphins have been by far the most aggressive team this offseason so far, and they wouldn’t be stopping at the draft. After not being able to get Burrow and the Redskins deciding that Young was their man, the Dolphins sat and watched as their man got drafted by the Chargers who just jumped them. Plan B goes into action, and the Dolphins trade up to the 4th overall to ensure they get Herbert by giving up their later first rounders along with a 4th rounder and a late 2021 pick, receiving the 4th overall and the 36th overall. After that, they traded away the 5th overall to acquire the 7th overall, along with a third. Using the 7th overall to beef up their O-line with Mekhi Becton.

Result:

Bengals: Joe Burrow QB
Redskins: Chase Young Edge
Chargers: Tua Tagoliavoa QB
Dolphins: Justin Herbert QB
Panthers: Isaiah Simmons ATH

Team Trades: Chargers receive 3rd overall pick and 182nd overall pick; Lions receive 6th, 37th overall pick, and 2021 4th rounder

Dolphins receive 4th overall pick and 36th overall pick; Giants receive 18th, 26th, 141st overall pick, and 2021 7th rounder.

Panthers receive 5th overall pick and 153rd/154th overall pick; Dolphins receive 7th and 69th overall pick.

Scenario 2

The predictable happens at number one overall as the Bengals get their QB of the future in Burrow, with the QB one off the board many teams scramble to try and move up to get the next big name. Dolphins make their move, and the second overall is theirs, giving up two firsts, a third, and a later round pick they get Herbert and let him sit till ready, with this new development the Lions decide to strike while the irons hot and take Young.

The Giants at this point have entirely zeroed in on Simmons and waste very little time taking him off the board, as the fifth pick roles around the Redskins get a phone call… from the Chargers, they want the fifth. Allen and Rivera decide to stockpile picks and move out of the fifth while receiving an early second along with a first for the following season. The Chargers, now with the 5th, look to the QB position as they look for someone to fill the big shoes that Rivers left as he moves on to Indy, Tua is thought of but ultimately, but the talent that Love has is too great to pass up.

Result:

Bengals: Joe Burrow QB
Dolphins: Justin Herbert QB
Lions: Chase Young Edge
Giants: Isaiah Simmons ATH
Chargers: Jordan Love QB

Team Trades: Dolphins receive 2nd overall pick and 66th overall pick; Redskins receive 5th, 26th, 70th, and the 173rd overall pick

Chargers receive 5th overall pick; Redskins receive 37th overall pick and 2021 1st rounder.

Scenario 3

With the world waiting for the Bengals to take Burrow, the phone rings. The Dolphins make one last effort to move up, offering all their firsts and a 3rd for the next season, after some discussion a deal decided upon, the first overall along with WR John Ross is sent to the Dolphins and Burrow gets ready to move to Miami.

After the shock of the century the Redskins get prepared to draft, they had heard some offers for the second pick but weren’t sold yet, they had a lot of holes to fill, and they needed more ammo. The Patriots decided they could foot the bill the Skins wanted payed, sending over five total picks for the second overall, and with that QB Justin Herbert is a Pat. The Giants take their man in Simmons, and with the Bengals new pick at 5th, they need a QB they can plug in and play, who better than Tua Tagovailoa to do it.

Result:

Dolphins: Joe Burrow QB
Patriots: Justin Herbert QB
Lions: Chase Young Edge
Giants: Isaiah Simmons ATH
Bengals: Tua Tagoviloa QB

Team Trades: Dolphins receive 1st overall pick and John Ross WR; Bengals receive 5th, 18th, 26th overall pick, and a 2021 3rd rounder

Patriots receive 2nd overall pick and a 2021 2nd rounder; Redskins receive 23rd, 87th, 98th, 100th, and 2021 1st rounder
