Panthers get deal done for new facility

Shortly after purchasing the Carolina Panthers, owner David Tepper stated that he wanted to increase the teams footprint in South Carolina.  That want is now a reality.  Carolina recently completed a $16 million-dollar land purchase of more than 240 acres to build a new complex in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  The complex will be a mixed-use development centered around the Panthers facility.  It will be pedestrian friendly with residential and commercial use.  Other than the Panthers’ offices and training facility, the surrounding area will include restaurants, shops, parks, green space, an amphitheater, and much more.

The project called, Project Avalanche, was approved in a 4-3 York County council vote.  The team will receive up to $225 million in tax breaks from the county, reducing the property from 6 to 4 percent and allowing Carolina to pay it as a fee instead of taxes.  The revenue will be used to cover infrastructure costs.

The Panthers plan to have the facility open in time for training camp in 2022.

The Panthers have held every training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina since 1995.  There is no word yet if Carolina will hold training camp this year at Wofford or in Charlotte.
