Lewis Hamilton Wins the Styrian GP
Lewis Hamilton won the Styrian GP in Austria after starting from pole position. His teammate in Mercedes Valteri Bottas managed to pass Max Verstappen at the closing stages of the race for P2, leaving the Red Bull driver the last man on the podium. Alex Albon finished behind his teammate Max, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. Lando snatched P5 after his astonishing final two laps where he made up 3 places with master-level overtaking skills and a bit of luck.
Sergio Perez for Racing Point had to settle down for P6 after colliding with Albon in their fight for the fourth position. The Mexican damaged his front wing, and struggled with the pace during his final two laps. Nevertheless, he did manage to stay ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll, as well as, Daniel Ricciaro’s Renault. Perez was also voted as the Driver of the Day by the fans around the world. Carlos Sainz in 9th had a rough day after starting 3rd on the grid, his best ever qualifying result. Nevertheless, the McLaren driver picked up an extra point by setting the fastest lap of the race. Daniil Kvyat for Alpha Tauri concluded the top 10 finishing group.
Kimi Raikkonen and Alfa Romeo had a much better race than last week’s disaster. The Iceman missed on the points, but places 11th after starting 16th on the grid. Right behind him were the two Haas’ drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean, followed by Kimi’s teammate Antonio Giovinazzi in 14th. Pierre Gasly managed to only finish 15th for Alpha Tauri, having started 7 that afternoon. Despite Williams’ strong qualifying results, their two drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi finished last in P16 and P17. It sure seems like the legendary British team still has a lot of improvement work to do.
Unfortunately for Ferrari, this weekend could not have gone any worse for them. Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc started in P10 and P14 after another disastrous qualifying session. To top off their struggles, Leclerc collided with his teammate on the opening lap of the race, forcing both of the cars to retire almost immediately. Esteban Ocon was the only other driver to retire after his Renault experienced cooling issues.
