A “New” Ferrari Ready for Barcelona?
The start of the 2020 season has been a complete disaster for Ferrari. With three Grands Prix already in the books, the Italians’ performance does not seem to have improved enough. Last week’s qualifying for the Hungarian GP was the first time this season for them to get both cars into top 10. Teams that fight to stay in top 10 do not generally fight for the championship. Let’s also not forget about the lap-one collision, after which Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel had to prematurely retire in Austria… However, it seems like Ferrari have not given up just yet. Reports by the Italian media F Uno Analisi Tecnica have suggested that the Scuderia are currently working on rebuilding their 2020 car.
The SF1000 first showed its poor performance during winter testing back in February. Even though Ferrari hoped that some major upgrades will improve the car in Hungary, the results just did not match those expectations. According to the media reports, a completely revised version of the SF1000 should be ready to appear in Barcelona for the Spanish GP on the Catalunya circuit. The 2020 F1 Spanish GP is scheduled for August 16, which is right after the two planned races in Silverstone, UK. This means that the Italians would have to survive for at least two more races before their “savior” touches the track.
Even though Ferrari have recently been largely mocked for their lack of coordination and performance, it would be fair to also recognize their persistent determination. Granted, 2020 appears to be a lost cause for all the 18 drivers outside of Mercedes, considering that Max Verstappen and Red Bull have not shown the necessary race-winning pace, as well. Nevertheless, this “Barcelona” project for re-building the SF1000 might just spice up the season when it comes to challengers for the lead.
