Cubs Add Bullpen and OF Depth at Deadline

The Cubs reportedly added 3 new players at the deadline in addition to Jose Martinez yesterday. The three new players include OF Cameron Maybin, LHP Andrew Chafin, and LHP Josh Osich.
Maybin joins Martinez as the newest hitters on the team as the Cubs add right-handed batting depth. Martinez will be a great compliment to the Cubs lefty outfielders such as Jason Heyward and Kyle Schwarber. Martinez has a career slash line of .319/.392/.554 against lefties, while Maybin oddly does better against RHP than LHP as a righty, with a slash line of .259/.329/.385 against righties and bats .250/.314/.356 against lefties. The Cubs sent the Rays cash and a PTBNL for Martinez, and sent SS Zack Short to DET for Cameron Maybin.

The two lefties the Cubs acquired at the deadline were from ARI and BOS. The Cubs each sent one PTBNL to both teams for Andrew Chafin and Josh Osich. Both of these players have struggled in the 2020 season with Chafin currently being on the IL with a whopping 8.10 ERA and Osich having a 5.74 ERA. Chafin has a career ERA of 3.68 and slightly does better against lefties with a opposing batting averages being .246 for righties and .230 for lefties. Josh Osich’s career ERA is 4.95 and does substantially better against lefties than righties given that lefties hit .211 and righties hit .292 against him.
