Tristan Jarry Re-Signed for Three More Seasons
Tristan Jarry was set to be a restricted free agent for the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 9th. A couple of days ago, General Manager Jim Rutherford got his way and decided to re-sign Jarry for a three-year deal worth $10.5 million. This is the answer for the goalie in the long term for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He will most likely be the starter in 2020-2021, despite Rutherford offering a qualifying offer for Matt Murray. There were reports today by Elliott Friedman of Sportsnet, that there was a potential deal in place for Matt Murray to be traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, but it doesn’t look like it is going to work out. Murray was going to be able to sign a long term contract for the Chicago Blackhawks had the deal gone through.
It appears as if Casey DeSmith is going to be the backup goalie next season. It would be a shock to see Matt Murray in a Pittsburgh Penguins uniform next season, but he is going to have to take a backup role if he stays with the club.
Jarry is 25 years old and he was the 44th overall pick (second-round selection) in the 2013 NHL Draft. Tristan Jarry was an All-Star last season for the Penguins. He started in 31 games and played in 33 games. Jarry’s record was 20-12-1 with a .921 save percentage and a 2.43 GAA, along with three shutouts.
In his career so far, he has played in 62 games and has started in 57 of them. His record is 30-24-4 with a .914 save percentage and a 2.61 GAA, along with five shutouts.
Matt Murray was the 83rd overall pick (third-round selection) in the 2012 NHL Draft. He is 26 years old. Murray played in 38 games and started in all 38 of them last season. His record was 20-11-5 with a .899 save percentage and a 2.87 GAA, along with one shutout. In 199 career games and in 193 games started, his record is 117-53-19 with a .914 save percentage and a 2.67 GAA, along with 11 shutouts.
Casey DeSmith is 29 years old. He played in 41 games last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL). His record was 18-18-2 with a .905 save percentage and a 2.92 GAA, along with three shutouts. In 50 career games in the NHL and in 41 games started, his record is 21-15-6 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.66 GAA, along with four shutouts.
It appears as if General Manager Jim Rutherford finally figured out the goaltending situation and he has a lot of more moves to make.
