Seth Jones Contract and the Race for Captain?- Columbus Blue Jackets

This is a two part article, which ties together nicely, in my mind.  First, Seth Jones.  The Defenseman may not have had many goals this season, however, he is still a mighty fine protector of the goal, and goaltender.  For this season, Seth Jones also remained healthy, and was one of few main CBJ players to do so this year.  With this being said, the team is skating in a brand new direction.  Many questions are being raised, some, far sooner than expected.  Seth Jones is a great example.

His contract extension was for 6 years and over 30 Million.  This doesn’t run out for another full season, but the team seems to be rushing the still young and powerful player, for a crystal ball answer already.  Could this backfire?  Yes.

After a season with no playoff, and the Head Coach John Tortorella leaving, the future of the team is in flux, without any sure answers.  I think this could sway Jones, negatively.  Of course, he is an amazing player and has seen Columbus through a lot, it just concerns me.  Why ask now, unless, Captain anyone?

This is the part two of this article.  If they want to know Seth Jones thought process, on the future, could it be due to offering him Nick Foligno’s past position, as Captain?  In my mind, and several others, there are two men really fit to put on those skates: Seth Jones and Cam Atkinson.  This part of the article may be speculation, however, it would understand them pressuring Jones for his headspace now, long before a contract extension is required.  After all, why name someone Captain, if they plan to leave?

Go CBJ!
