Forgive me, but as a true 5th liniment, saying “cause of death” seems, impersonal. I never met him, but after seeing the posts by fellow fans today, I wish I had. Sadly, we’ve recently learned the cause of death, of one of our own. This morning I reported, as every news outlet did, that Kivlenieks died after an apparent fall, which caused a head injury. Now, we’ve learned it was far more unsettling that even that idea was, just hours ago.
We now know the accident happened in Michigan, which claimed the life of the young, 24-year-old goaltender. It has also been said, it was not the fall which killed him, but a wayward firework. It collided with his chest, and damaged organs, including the heart and lungs.
This is devestating, and still being treated as just a horrible accident, which it appears to be. Again, we keep the family in our thoughts, through this difficult time. It was recently reveled as well, via WSYX ABC 6, that his family remains in Latvia, where the player is from.
May you rest in peace, #80.
In addition, I’ve made a personal decision. Whatever money I make from these two articles, about the passing of this beloved player, will be donated to the Blue Jackets Foundation. It just seems right, in my mind, to do this, not just as a sports writer, but as a fan.
