Rockies, Cardinals agree to Arenado Trade

While most of the baseball world was settled in for the night and perhaps catching up on some Netflix binge watching or perhaps even out on the town with some friends, front office staff in St. Louis and Denver were hard at work hammering out the blockbuster trade of the 2020-2021 offseason. Late last night, Ken Rosenthal first reported that the Colorado Rockies have agreed to trade All-Star 3B, Nolan Arenado, to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The deal is unlikely to be 100% official this weekend, as Arenado still has to waive his no-trade clause in order to make the move. Jeff Passan of ESPN has reported that Colorado is still paying a significant portion of Arenado’s future earnings, but St. Louis will still be paying him about $25M/year. Passan also writes, “If the deal is seen through to the finish line… the Rockies would trade their franchise player just two years into a deal that was supposed to keep him in their uniform until 2026, and Arenado would leave the only team he has played for – and one he sought a trade from after he believed it had done a poor job building around him [last season].”

The St. Louis Cardinals just became NL Central favorites in 2021 literally overnight. The Cubs, Brewers, and Reds have done nothing but subtract from their roster, and none of which have made any significant additions to improve upon their 2020 seasons. As for the NL West, the division just became even more likely to be the two-man race to the finish we all expected it to be between Los Angeles and San Diego. It’s a great day for San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks fans who were hoping to avoid last place in 2021, but a terrible day for fans in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati.
