Although Honda do not currently have their own Formula One team, the Japanese manufacturer still supplies engines to others. This, however, is about to change pretty soon, as Honda announces their departure from the sport after the end of 2021.

As of now, there are only two teams that rely on Honda as their engine supplier – Red Bull and Alpha Tauri. It seems like the Japanese engine supplier are not planning on staying in the sport for the major 2022 changes, which leaves Red Bull and Alpha Tauri on the look for new partnerships. Most, however, would expect that both of these teams would go back to using Renault engines, just like they have done before (last time for Alpha Tauri – 2017; last time for Red Bull – 2018).

Honda came back to Formula One in 2015 and initially partnered with McLaren. Unfortunately, their three-year-long stint was a complete disaster marked by poor reliability and lack of adequate progress. Nevertheless, the engine supplier has had some high points since then, especially through Max Verstappen and Red Bull. Max has won 4 race victories and 16 podiums since Honda started supplying engines to the team in 2019.

Parts of Honda’s statement read, “Honda will work together with Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri to continue competing with its utmost effort and strive for more victories all the way to the end of the 2021 season”.

Nevertheless, fans around the world get to enjoy seeing the “Honda” badge for at least one more season. With Red Bull looking strong in 2020, one could never know what awaits for us in 2021, so make sure to follow the subject! SkullKing Sports will keep you posted.
