Vikings’ Early Returns – Preseason Week One Review

The first week of the preseason in the NFL is a lot like Who’s Line is it, Anyway? – everything is made up and the points don’t matter. However, we are football fans, and what’s worse, we’re fantasy football fans. For us, every point matters. So here are three take away points from the Hall of Fame game last Thursday between the Steelers and the Vikings.

  • The NFL is so big, it could run for the GOP nomination… and win – Seriously, the only thing bigger on television than Trump’s comb-over is the NFL. Did you know that the first preseason game of 2015 (the one where almost none of the stars play and which typically involves two teams that weren’t in the playoffs last season), rated higher than NBA Eastern Conference game one, NBA Western Conference game one, the Indy 500 and the ALDS game one? It rated almost twice as many viewers as the 2014 NLDS game one! Other sports have postseason games that can’t even draw the same crowd as what is nothing more than a glorified scrimmage.
  • Teddy Bridgewater looked good – I don’t mean that he was handsome, although… Wait, I’m a married man. But Teddy Bridgewater came out slinging and he did it at a clip of 5 for 6 for 44 yards. What’s more impressive is that of the 5 passes, 4 went to different receivers. Aside from a miscue in the end zone, Teddy played a well structured, controlled, and clean game to kick off his second tour as Vikings front man. So who caught two of Teddy’s 6 passes for 22 yards?
  • Kyle Rudolph (and other TEs) – Hey, I know it’s the pre-season, and I know that I have repeatedly mentioned this guy as a possible game changer both for the Vikings in real football, and for you in fantasy football. That said, regardless of any ulterior motives I may have regarding Kyle Rudolph, the tight ends got involved early and often in last night’s Viking attack. MyCole Pruitt, recent late round draft pick of the Vikings showed me that I may have been wrong when I labeled him a non-entity in terms of fantasy value. If the preseason counted, his 4 catches of 4 targets for 51 yards and a TD would have made him the hands down fantasy player of the game. I like the look of this Vikings offense thus far in the preseason and am excited to see what the future holds for this young talented team once Adrian Peterson returns to the fold.

I’ll have more breakdown coming when the starters take a few more reps on offense and until then feel free to follow me on twitter @word_bubbles or email me at [email protected]
